The new Cult of Luna album is awesome as usual. Pretty excited to see them live again in a few weeks.

I know this is weird, but for my own, mostly nostalgic purposes I've been cataloging every album I've over had. In due course I was forced to remember some really shitty metalcore bands I listened to throughout the years. I'm talking the likes of Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Bleeding Through and into screamo territory with ArmsBendBack, From Autumn to Ashes, Eighteen Visions, Hopesfull, and basically the entire late 90-early 2000s roster of Trustkill and Ferret Records. It's all so regrettable now, but was all (I tell myself) just a stepping stool toward greater, faster, louder, and more brutal types of metal. Some of the bands I still listen to, and rather fondly at that: Poison the Well and Zao are mainstays in my audio arsenal. But the rest was all long forgotten...until now. Yikes. Gotta crawl before you can mosh, I suppose.

I heard you folks like that sweeping ethereal shit that I'm going to tentatively call post-doom. Suck on some Year of No Light.

That Year of No Light stuff is great. Here's a song from Kylesa's next release.

I'm feeling that deep groove, but I don't care for the clean vocals. What is it with bands trying to reinvent themselves by pandering to people that "love metal but not the vocals"? Fuck you. Tape your grundle up and get ready for harsh, unintelligble, might be a demonic Cookie Monster vocals, or stick to southern rock.

Fuck's sake. I haven't heard deathcore done like this before. These dudes Acrania, despite the terrible name, blend brutality with some really nice headbanging grooves. The vocals, though, are what really stand out. They've got two dudes, one for the occasional raspy bits, and the main vocalist, who alternates between really drawn out guttural shit and this staccato bursts of insanity that I AM LOVING. This is like the first Despised Icon record, but more punishing and with better production value. Acrania - The Beginning of the End EP is available for free as well, so you've got nothing to lose.

Also, in scouring the internet for quality metal bands I've come across some incredible (and often quite laughable) band names. Here's the top gems:

Begging for Incest (they're actually really good, which was a surprise)
Ozoru Hammer (not as bad as you'd think a Dragonball Z metal tribute band would be)
Parasitic Ejaculation (mediocre)
Abortion Autopsy (which doesn't even make sense, and they suck)
Excrement Cultivation (as shitty as their name suggests)
Severed Crotch (mediocre)
Foreboding Ether (above average, but nothing to write a friend about)
Gary Busey Amber Alert (my personal favorite as far as names go, but nothing exceptional otherwise)
The Daisy Antithesis (What? Mediocre)
Introrectalgestation (I couldn't bring myself to even try this one)
Chainsaw Penis (yep)

And the best for last... EATENBYWOMBATS (worst shit I've ever heard)

I like Abominable Putridity for a band name.
