new music places??  Reply with quote

its a jungle out there.
I am stuck in the past and only following the artists i already know about.
Im trying to find ways for new music to get to me.
I need some blogs or sites i can check daily and find new and fresh hiphop.
not just the big name blogs that seem to put up a lot of the same dross.
thanks in advance.

there really are not any good sites with a collective of new tracks/ news that i know of anymore that are not already known, i wish there was something like hiphop infinity where you can dig around and listen to audio and stuff by new and existing artists , all in one hiphop type site, but really you just have to go about it through individual label sites and affiliations , kinda old school like when you used to check in cd booklets and look up stuff from the credits and thank you notes, other than that its all the same channels you probally know of

I think bandcamp is amazing for this sort of thing because you can just search stuff by tags and then kinda randomly go through. You'll find a lot of chaff this way, but there is some good stuff if you look for it.

Yes, yes, and yes to bandcamp. There is a lot of crap, as kHill said, but when you find something awesome it's so much more rewarding. There's the added bonus of free music, in some cases, and the chance to put money directly into the artist's pocket. If you have the time and the patience, you can discover some truly great music.

Other than that, I would just check out a few review sites. Most just push bullshit (i.e. Pitchfork) but others (Stereogum, Circleintosquare, Popmatters, and even rcrdlbl) usually have some good music worth checking out. Other that, podcasts? I have no advice on that front though.

My top 3 over the past year to date are: thefindmag, ugsmag and syffal.

thefindmag being the best to me. It was my favorite website for music last year and continues to be this year. Ugsmag coming in second and syffal third.

The only hip hop mag/blog that I've found that I can stand to read is egotrip.

I first went there because of J Zone's occasional articles, but have found myself reading it more generally.

I get some good recommendations off my twitter and my youtube channel and the rest comes from friends.

You've turned me on to some excellent stuff, for sure, most memorably YPPAH and Riot Jazz.
