it's all over with, the records have gotten me.  Reply with quote

When i was in junior high and high school, i had a cash flow problem in regards to buying music. all my money went to buy music. one day i just vowed to stop buying music, and sold my cd collection off to a used music store.

for years after that, i managed to subsist off a stack of local/underground hip hop cd's i would buy from artists i knew, or at shows solely. my cd's now could fit in a box.

it took me a long time to get myself under control in regards to a music buying compulsion. and i threw it all away this past week when i started buying records. i was working on a holiday canvass for the organization i work for and we met at a coffee shop next to a record store every day last week. the first day i peered in to the window. the second day i walked in and looked at some records. the third day i went in and spent almost fifty dollars, the fourth day i went in with a nagging feeling that there were records i should have bought the day before and spent thirty dollars. the day after that i woke up and put on my snow boots and just randomly started walking until i reached an entirely different record store, near my house. i didn't really plan to go there. but i ended up spending seventy dollars.

now every day i wake up thinking, i need more records, i need to look for this one record, i havent been to this particular record store yet, will i ever find the ronnie milsap record i have searched for all week?

this all stems from a day i went to my coworkers art space and he had shelves and shelves of records that belonged to him and his art space partner. i asked if i could dj. i picked out a few records i liked that were mostly old school country and played them and then got baked and went off on a wild tangent about how i should get a record player and some records and be a country music dj and play classic country records for old rednecks at vfw's and lions clubs and whatnot. because i dont know anyone who does that, it's like a niche market that hasn't been cornered yet.

at first i was kinda joking. now i think i mean it.

a few months from now you will read an article about how my floor caved in and my downstairs neighbor was crushed to death by george jones and kenny rogers albums.

to top it all off, i got home with the first bag of records and my record player no longer worked. but i kept buying records all week anyways. i haven't listened to any of them yet either.

i'm fucked. there's no hope for me. the records have gotten me and they are holding me and my disposable income hostage.

i hear ya.
a record collecting addiction is difficult because you cannot convince yourself that not buying records is a good idea. they're just too awesome...

Still don't have that many but always adding to the collection, which is kinda stupid since i don't even dj much anymore.

I have the government to thank for starting me off: When i was student i qualified for the (then) generous study allowance so i'd pay the rent, then not eat and spend all the rest on albums. Too bad when i started out i bought absolute shit that i later sold for peanuts / threw out.

I stopped buying CDs when my collection got stolen I've been buying vinyl for the last 10 years I'm to the point where I need to build a shelf if I want to store/organize them
Records are where it's at.
Vinyl has a proven longer 'shelf' life then CDs also.
I'm buying some of the same records my family bought 60+ years ago for less then it cost to manufacture them that long ago.

Oh and I'm a fan of music not a dj or collector or a producer or anything. I just feel good music deserves to be bought and rather it be something not everyone has.

CRAZY....check the actual stylus itself...the needle. Probably worn out. That is what sits in the groove of the record....if it can't catch a groove...it is just gonna slide right across the record.

What kind of table is it?

You can try a new stylus. However, skating is usually an issue with your tone arm. if you have an anti skating nob, you can play with that, or you can try to tweak the weight on the arm if it has an adjustable weight. If you don't have an anti skate nob nor a weight, your internal tone arm spring may have worn out or gotten straightened. That would be annoying to fix yourself.
