I missed your last show in Bend and always swore I'd be there no matter what if you came back. I'm about 2.5 hours away and have to work the next morning, so it might be a pain in the ass, but I'm going to do my best to get there!

Well, more power to you Phataccino. I understand how that's a big pain in the ass.

I just added another show in California this January, which makes it 6 shows in total there. And that's kind of fucking crazy. I even had to turn down a couple shows in Cali in January. What the hell is going on with me needing to play so many shows in Cali this January? No complaints here, but I must say...this is not normal on any level. haha. Fuck. And it's a $5 show in a big venue. Do people know something about me that I don't? Am I on a "Pseudo-Celebrity" Death Pool or something?

Can you get me into that 1/31 show for 10 bucks instead of 25? We are best friends, man.

The Bend, OR show at Domino Room has changed from Feb 1st to Feb 2nd. Because the Superbowl is on Feb 1st and that's something I'd rather watch in the comfort of my own dirty hotel room.

Well...damn.

I'm sure a day off between shows when you're on the road is much needed/deserved.

Thanks again for coming to Sac, I know it's far from home. So excited only 2 days away!

I appreciate you still doing this. I'm bummed my ex threw out my Natalie Portman has a stalker shirt (the 2001 one!) In August. Weaksauce. I wanted to be "That Guy"

I'm old enough to not care anymore.

although if I wore my newer crap: jacket, hat and shirt it might be a tad much :/

Hahaa understood. I do like seeing people wearing the old shirt designs. There's typically a few at each show. Man, these Cali shows have been absolutely bonkers. The last two nights were sold out. Last night in Santa Ana...1000 people. And it's the third time I've played that same venue in one year! I think it's a good thing I don't live on the west coast. I'd have nothing to be mad about with all this love around me.

Big ups to Phataccino for making depriving himself of sleep to check out the Bend show tonight. I am also depriving myself of sleep, but I get paid to do that. Hope you enjoyed the show, homie. It was really nice getting to chat it up with you. Best wishes on clearing the red from your eyes. Haha. Salute!

I got home at 3 a.m. and that 5:30 alarm came waaaay too soon this morning, but after a few gallons of coffee, I'm good to go. I was going to write a proper show review, but I'll just drop some thoughts here:

As I was driving home last night I realized that this was my 10th time seeing you live, the first time coming 13 years ago almost to the date, with those shows spanning six different cities in four states. I don't mention that because I think I deserve a medal or something, but to say this: Despite what was, frankly, a subpar venue and the by far the smallest crowd of any show I've been at, last night's performance was probably the best, or at least my favorite.

It was a perfect mix of old and new, incorporating some of my favorite tracks from the Sick of...tapes, Personal Journals, Hope (the Damage/MOP mashup was one of my favorite moments last night), A Healthy Distrust, etc. right on through the discography. To me the price of admission would have been worth it if you would have just played Bridle, Sea Lion, and Escape Artist then left.

I've always appreciated the way you engage the crowd. Most artists interact with the audience one way or another, but at every show I've been to, you use the crowd almost like a prop. We become part of the show, and it raises the bar and improves the overall experience. I don't really know how to describe it, but nobody else that I've seen does it as well. And last night was no exception.

I don't know...I'm rambling here because in the last two days I've spent about 14 hours driving and only seven hours sleeping, and I'm way to old for that. Speaking of which, if I wasn't the oldest person in the room last night, I was certainly in the conversation. And I was definitely the only one who came straight from work still wearing a suit and tie, haha.

After all these years on the road, I don't know how you do it, but not only do you still have it, you're better than ever. I can imagine it might be tempting to see a small crowd and a shitty venue in the middle of a tour and phone it in for a night, but I really appreciate that you didn't. Anyone within range of any of the East Coast shows coming up should definitely make the effort to get there, you won't be disappointed.

Phataccino,

""Despite what was, frankly, a subpar venue and the by far the smallest crowd of any show I've been at, last night's performance was probably the best, or at least my favorite."

Means a lot to hear you say that, man. I also had someone else who has attended a lot of shows tell me that this was the best performance they've seen me do. I'm surprised to hear it, especially in this type of venue, but I'm guessing this is the first time you've seen me perform all alone on stage? Just a guess. This is some people's preference. My preference usually too. I don't remember what my crowd attendance was like at previous Bend shows, but this was definitely not what I was expecting to see. Then again, it's not a big town and it's totally in the middle of nowhere. Ha. I hope I can return but it might take another 7 or 10 years.

"I've always appreciated the way you engage the crowd. Most artists interact with the audience one way or another, but at every show I've been to, you use the crowd almost like a prop. Glad to see that someone has taken notice. It's very intentional, man. Over the years I've figured out to incorporate crowd involvement without doing the typical tricks or call-response shit. It also helps that the fans seem to know the music so well that they already know how and when to do certain things without me asking. It's not all about *that*, but that really helps.

"if I wasn't the oldest person in the room last night, I was certainly in the conversation."

Perhaps. But two of my grandmother's friends were in the crowd, so at least you were still a young whippersnapper to them.

Again, thank you. It means a lot to see someone taking notice. I've long believed that a crowd of any size deserves the best performance possible. People come with expectations, and I do my best to meet them if not exceed them. Can't always do that, but I try. One of the things that always stuck in my craw is when a rapper or musician would call in a performance just because they were playing in little old Rhode Island.

You drove straight from work and missed out on precious sleep to support your boy. Hats off to you, my dude. SALUTE.
