This downgrade wasn't inevitable, nor does a high level of spending inevitably lead to a downgrade, unless you neglect to increase your income appropriately. It's absolutely ridiculous that our tax rates are at one of their lowest rates of the last century even as our spending in real terms (both privately AND publicly) is at one of its highest.

This is not entirely the Tea Party's fault--it was, after all, the second Bush who slashed taxes in the first place, and the Tea Party supposedly hates him--but it IS entirely their fault that even the INTENDED EXPIRATION of those TEMPORARY cuts was not allowed to occur.

Everyone's a Republican until they're old enough to get Social Security or poor enough to need a Pell Grant.

Also, the comparison with increased credit card spending is a bad one. Keynes never pretended that if John Doe would only go shopping more often, his debt load would be diminished. The difference is that when governments go shopping, their purchases have the potential to lead to increased income in a variety of ways, which can (theoretically) more than make up for the additional spending.

Standard & Poor's, you'll recall, is the same brilliant organization that had all those companies with shitty subprime mortgages ranked AAA. They were also off $2 trillion dollars in their initial downgrade report until the White House pointed out that they, um, added wrong so perhaps it'd be stupid to cause widespread panic by downgrading the U.S. credit rating. Which they went ahead and did anyway. In addition, our credit rating is supposed to reflect the ability of the country to pay back bondholders (not the utter madness infecting one political party), something that was NEVER in jeopardy.

Are we following this money trail yet?

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/08/08/1004541/-Standard-s-CEO-Gives-$$$-to-Romney,-Bush,-GOP-Party

Quote:

I did some checking this afternoon on the Federal Election Commission's database of financial contributors to political candidates. Within minutes I found that Harold W. McGraw III, the Chairman, President, and CEO of Standard & Poor's parent company, is a big money contributor to lots of Republicans.

Repeat recipients of McGraw's largess include Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, the National Republican Congressional Committee, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, something called the Bush-Cheney Compliance Committee, and many more Republicans. He primarily gives his big money donations to PACs and Republicans, although a few Democrats have benefited as well. He has never given any money to the Obama campaign nor any to the Democratic Party.

Gee, how convenient. Standard and Poor's issues a politically biased rating with a $2 trillion error. Republicans wave that rating around like Moses just brought it down from the mountain as verification of their defamation about the Obama presidency. And the head of the company making those ratings happens to give money to the likes of Mitt Romney and the Republican Party.

Wonder who gets the S&P backing for presidency, and in turn gets to be the president that "saves" the credit rating?

It won't happen. Those two have too much simmering jealousy between them.

I do not think Palin was ever serious about running. Its not profitable enough.

Also I would have to agree with Jon Stewart's critic of Palin in that she has very thin skin for such a controversial figure. She would not be the ideal candidate have on your ticket during the final 8 months of your presidential run.

Absolutely amazing. I really hope your comic genius isn't reserved strictly to the internet. Let it breathe.

I prefer to smother it with a pee soaked pillow.
