B. Dolan’s record release show!

The “Fallen House, Sunken City” record release show on 2/27/10 at Jerky’s in Providence, RI was one of the best shows I’ve ever been a part of for a variety of reasons.

Happy Birthday, B Dolan

Before I get into the details, I’d like to apologize to the people who were turned away at the door due to this being a sold out show. As much as we hope that our shows will sell out, I never expect it to happen. Some people traveled as far as Detroit to see this show and I really hope those who traveled from out of state purchased their tickets ahead of time!  B. Dolan, Alias, What Cheer? Brigade, and I (along with the full Strange Famous fam) would like to thank the people who came out to support. For those who missed it, here’s a full video of the final song that was performed with B. Dolan and What Cheer? Brigade at the record release show:

By the time I got to the club it was already packed to the brim. I hit the stage at 10pm and performed 8 songs I’ve never done before. My new album, Li(f)e, drops on May 11th so this show seemed like a good opportunity for me to work out certain kinks. With that in mind, it was very stressful doing so much new material rather than relying on older songs that the crowd could immediately latch onto. The response to my performance left me feeling more confident about what I’m about to unleash on the world. It also gave me a clear indication of what I need to fix and improve upon before I tour the globe. Thanks, RI.

As soon as I exited the stage the Providence marching band, What Cheer? Brigade, took the crowd by complete surprise. I mean…what do you really expect to see when you’re told that a marching band is going to be playing at a hiphop show? It’s not something that can easily be explained in words but as soon as they started their set (from the stage and from the floor) they made instant fans of everyone at Jerky’s.

Alias was scheduled to perform next, but due to throat problems he opted to skip out on a rap set and, instead, he took to the beat station. Despite not getting a solo set from the man behind the brilliant production of “Fallen House, Sunken City” it was crucial having his presence at this record release show. I’d like to thank him and his wife (carrying their unborn child!) for making the trek down to Providence to help us celebrate. Congratulations on the baybayyyy!!!

B. Dolan hit the stage about an hour earlier than I expected him to. The club was completely sold out by this point so I was in a back room settling up with management when I heard him kick his set off with “Leaving NY.” As I was supposed to be hyping for the man of the hour I made a dash to the backstage area, threw on my Earthmovers flight suit, and joined in for the remainder of the set which last about an hour and a half.

Added bonus…it’s B. Dolan’s birthday this week. So…

For the very last song of the night, Dolan worked it out so that What Cheer? Brigade would play the music they recorded for the Border Crossing song on “Fallen House, Sunken City.” Beyond that, there was an additional choir section that consisted of Shane Hall and friends. Before this point in the show B. Dolan had already given a clinic on how hiphop shows should be thrown. But what happened as an encore totally blew the roof off the place. You haven’t lived until you’ve rapped on stage with a marching band as the crowd goes completely ape shit. If you missed this show but you live in the vicinity of Providence then…shame shame know your name. All of this happened for a $10 ticket.

I’m going to end this blog with a few more photos from the show, but before I do that I’d like to thanks the friends and fans who traveled from NYC, CT, MA, NH, ME, MI, and wherever else to support our music. Mr. B Dolan, Alias, What Cheer, SFR crew, the people who cleaned up the cake afterward…you rule.
